The 10-gram TLC cartridge's three-piece construction incorporates titanium, stainless steel and tungsten; its design was conceived to keep it firmly in place in the TLC port during the swing, yet easy to remove and re-install. It is completely interchangeable for use in the r7 quad or r7quad TP driver.
When developing the r7 quad's heavier TLC cartridges, TaylorMade's research and development department was challenged to find a way to secure them in the TLC port while also making them easy to remove. (Usually, heavy clubhead weights are permanently installed, because the load of impact can dislodge a heavy weight.)
TaylorMade engineers solved the problem by devising a three-piece TLC Cartridge. The first piece is made of heavy tungsten in the shape of a truncated cone, with a hole bored through from top-to-bottom, which accommodates the second piece of the cartridge; a long, thin screw. Part number three is a stainless steel retaining ring permanently attached to the rim of the cylinder, like a cap. The head of the screw is sandwiched loosely between the top of the truncated cone and the retaining ring, allowing access to the screw through the center of the ring.
It works like this: When the screw is tightened, the cylinder descends into the port until the cylinder is snugly wedged within the port's walls, creating what is known as a 'press-fit' wherein equal pressure on all sides hold the weight securely in place. The screw does not hold the weight in the port; it can't. The repeated jolt of impact would eventually loosen the screw. What function does the screw serve? To remove the TLC Cartridge from the port. When the screw is loosened, the head of the screw pushes upward against the retaining ring, dislodging the truncated cylinder from its pressure fit, allowing the TLC Cartridge to slide freely from the port.
